Using CBD Hemp Oil For Pets

CBD stands for cannabidiol and it is an active chemical found in hemp oil

. It is important to note that CBD hemp oil is different from medical or traditional marijuana because it is derived from hemp plants that have low THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) levels. Traditional medical marijuana products are high in THC, which contributes to a high feeling.

How does CBD Affect our Bodies?

CBD interacts with a couple of systems in the body, namely CB1 receptors and CB2 receptors. The first type of receptor is found throughout one’s body and many exist in the brain. These receptors affect how we move, our appetite, thoughts, and mood. CB2 receptors are mostly found in the immune system, which affect inflammation and pain. CBD is believed to help with inflammation because of its therapeutic effects and ability to potentially provide natural pain relief.

What works for you may work for your pets as well. The problem is that not every pet owner wants their pet to experience a high while receiving the benefits of CBD. That’s why CBD  hemp oil is used instead so that the user can receive therapeutic benefits without being impaired.

CBD Hemp Oil – A Better Alternative for Pets

Also known as cannabidiol oil or CBD oil, hemp oil was one of the fastest growing health trends for both humans and pets in 2019. These products could be found on the shelves of one’s vet’s office and local pet boutiques. It turns out that CBD hemp oil has been extensively researched. This type of oil is derived from a special strain of cannabis – hemp. This strain of cannabis is special in a sense that it’s regulated by law to contain less than .3% of THC. With the proper dosage, this amount is far too small to harm any pet.

Hemp is high in cannabidiol; it is not psychoactive and won’t get your dog or cat high. This compound has several potential health benefits and animal chiropractors have used these products to help reduce pain and inflammation, restore normal motion, and more.

Anti-Inflammatory Effects

Older and handicapped dogs typically suffer from chronic conditions and inflammation is a significant source of pain. Unfortunately, these cases are commonly treated with NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). This class of drugs may cause issues in the pet’s gastrointestinal tract, as well as kidney and/or liver function. Aging and immune-compromised dogs seem to get the brunt of it, i.e., renal failure or death. Cannabidiol, on the other hand, has fewer and less severe known side effects. It can be applied topically to the affected areas of the pet’s skin or taken orally.

Long-Term Pain Management

Proper pain management is a key component of treatment to maintain the quality of life for both senior and disabled pets. Pain can be caused by several reasons, including recent surgery, injury, or progressive diseases such as arthritis, hip dysplasia, or IVDD (intervertebral disc disease). In these cases, reducing pain would be important for one’s special needs dog’s quality of life. Although opioids can be prescribed, these prescription medications have side effects that can cause long term liver damage, chemical dependence, or increase the risks of a lethal overdose. If you are looking for a natural supplement cannabidiol, hemp oil is an option to consider.

Consult with a Veterinarian First

Although CBD for pets is becoming increasingly popular and can be acquired without a prescription, always consult with a veterinarian before giving it to your pet. This step is essential to prevent these products from interfering with the metabolism of other drugs your pet may need for a certain treatment.
